Lebbeus Woods dies at age 72.
At some point all of us with architectural background were confronted with the work of Lebbeus Woods. For some it was confusing and not to be bothered with. For others is spurred a season of deconstructivist architecture that resulted in hours of creating models from cereal boxes and raw materials.
His work seemed to be science fiction. As noted in the New York Times:
"Mr. Woods’s work was often described as fantasy and compared to
science-fiction imagery. But he made clear that while he may not have
expected his designs to be built, he wished they would be — and believed
they could be."
That "wish" and "belief" is what keeps every passionate designer doodling and sketching through the ages.
Lebbeus was praised and criticized during his time. He handled the criticism and carried on, pressing forward and staying true to what he was driven to do. While many buildings will eventually disappear his sketches will still inspire for years to come.
