A Farmer’s Market. In the city. Open 7 days a week!

Although possessing a family history in grocery store operations running as far back as the 1920s, this is owner Danielle Vogel’s first ownership effort into the business she grew up around. Launching Glen’s Garden Market as an extension of her former career as environmental counsel to Sen. Joseph Lieberman, she’s able apply her principles of environmental awareness and responsibility directly to products she offers and the environment surrounding them.

Glen’s Garden Market offers locally grown and produced food items as well as daily prepared meals, charcuterie, beer & wine dry goods. Establishing a close relationship with local farmers and vendors, 99% of Glen’s products are sourced from states within the Chesapeake watershed.

Studio|H2G partnered with Vogel to design a retail experience that captures her vision for an everyday farmer’s market. The design team of Julie Dugas and Andrea Davis worked closely with Vogel to deliver an experience that would communicate the brand vision to the shoppers.

Fresh, nostalgic, farm, engaging and honest are descriptive words the design team relied on throughout the strategy and design phases. Looking to historic urban markets for inspiration; the long display tables in the “grocery” area of the store are reminiscent of antique markets or home goods retailers. Utilizing the full height of the building’s sizable and significant volume is a nod to turn of the century full service grocery shopping.

Incorporating elements typically found in some of the great food halls throughout Europe, the market component features a variety of prepared foods as well as an extensive café menu developed by in-house chef Sean Sullivan. All of this occurring in just over 5000 sq ft. of floor area.

Sustainability was part of the conversation throughout the design process. The design team worked closely with the client to develop an environment that incorporates various elements of sustainable design such as highly efficient refrigeration and cooking equipment, FSC certified wood, and high efficient lighting). The same theme and principles of environmental awareness also finds its way into Glen’s Garden Market’s brand identity.

Coordination with local architect David Tracz of Studio3877 ensured the design concept was translated successfully into the built environment.
